What Is Moxibustion?

Moxibustion (often called "moxa") is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy that involves burning dried mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) near or on the skin to warm specific acupuncture points or areas of the body. This ancient healing practice has been used for thousands of years to strengthen the blood, stimulate the flow of Qi, and maintain overall health.

The herb mugwort has unique properties that make it ideal for this therapy—it burns at a consistent temperature and produces a penetrating warmth that reaches deep into the body. The heat and the medicinal properties of the herb work together to invigorate circulation, dispel cold and dampness, and tonify the body's vital energy.

Moxibustion is particularly beneficial for conditions caused by cold or stagnation, including certain types of pain, digestive issues, menstrual problems, and fatigue. It's also widely used to boost immunity, support fertility, and turn breech babies during pregnancy.

Types of Moxibustion

Indirect Moxibustion

The most common method. A moxa stick is held close to the skin, warming the acupuncture point without touching it. Safe, comfortable, and deeply warming.

Best for: Most conditions, general tonification, sensitive patients

Needle Moxa

A small ball of moxa is placed on the handle of an inserted acupuncture needle and burned. The heat travels down the needle for deep, targeted warming.

Best for: Deep joint pain, stubborn cold conditions

Box Moxa

Moxa is burned inside a special box placed over larger areas like the abdomen or back. Provides gentle, sustained warmth over a broad area.

Best for: Digestive issues, menstrual support, low back pain

About the Smoke: Moxibustion produces an aromatic smoke that many find pleasant and therapeutic. Our treatment rooms are well-ventilated. If you're sensitive to smoke, please let me know—smokeless moxa options are available.

Moxibustion FAQs

No, moxibustion should never burn you. The moxa is held at a safe distance from the skin, creating a pleasant, penetrating warmth. I constantly monitor the temperature and your comfort. If it ever feels too hot, simply let me know and I'll adjust immediately.

Burning mugwort has a distinctive, earthy, slightly herbal aroma that many people find pleasant and calming. Some describe it as similar to sage or marijuana (though it's a completely different plant). The smell can linger on clothing. If you're sensitive to smoke, smokeless moxa options are available.

Moxibustion on a specific point near the little toe (BL67) has been shown to help turn breech babies. The warmth is believed to increase fetal activity and encourage the baby to turn head-down. This technique is most effective between weeks 34-36 of pregnancy and is often combined with specific positions.

Moxibustion can be safe during pregnancy when performed by a trained practitioner, but certain points must be avoided. It's commonly used for breech presentation and to support labor. Always inform me if you're pregnant so I can ensure safe treatment protocols.
