Acupuncture for Neuropathy in Schaumburg, IL
The numbness, tingling, burning, and stabbing sensations in your hands or feet aren't something you should have to accept as permanent. Peripheral neuropathy affects millions of people, and conventional medicine often treats it as a condition to manage rather than improve. If gabapentin or pregabalin isn't controlling your symptoms, or if the side effects are almost as bad as the neuropathy itself, there's more you can do. At Acupuncture Divine Flow in Schaumburg, Hristina Dimova treats neuropathy by restoring nerve function, improving circulation to damaged nerves, and addressing the underlying conditions that caused the nerve damage in the first place.

Why Neuropathy Gets Worse Without the Right Treatment
Peripheral neuropathy happens when the nerves outside your brain and spinal cord are damaged. The most common cause is diabetes, but it can also result from chemotherapy, autoimmune conditions, vitamin deficiencies, alcohol use, spinal problems, infections, and in many cases, no identifiable cause at all (idiopathic neuropathy). The symptoms usually start in the feet and hands and work their way inward: numbness, tingling, burning pain, sensitivity to touch, weakness, and loss of balance.
The standard medical approach focuses on managing symptoms. Gabapentin, pregabalin, duloxetine, and sometimes opioids are prescribed to reduce pain. These medications can take the edge off, but they come with significant side effects including drowsiness, dizziness, weight gain, and cognitive fog. More importantly, they don't improve nerve function. They reduce your perception of the pain without addressing the nerve damage that's causing it. For many patients, the neuropathy continues to progress while the medications mask the symptoms.
Traditional Chinese Medicine approaches neuropathy as a circulation and nourishment problem. In TCM, the extremities depend on adequate qi and blood flow to function properly. When circulation is compromised, whether by blood stagnation, qi deficiency, dampness accumulation, or Kidney and Liver depletion, the nerves and tissues in the hands and feet are the first to suffer because they're the farthest from the body's center. Numbness indicates blood isn't reaching the area. Tingling indicates qi is stagnant. Burning pain indicates heat or toxic accumulation in the channels. Cold numbness indicates Cold invasion and yang deficiency. Each pattern requires a different treatment approach, which is why a generic neuropathy protocol rarely works as well as a targeted one.
How We Treat Neuropathy at Our Schaumburg Office
Hristina begins with a detailed evaluation of your neuropathy. She'll assess sensation, reflexes, and strength in your hands and feet, ask about the specific quality and pattern of your symptoms, and review the cause of your neuropathy if known. She performs pulse and tongue assessment to identify the TCM pattern driving your nerve dysfunction, which helps her distinguish between a blood stagnation case, a dampness case, a deficiency case, and a toxic heat case, each of which requires a different treatment strategy.
Treatment may include:
Acupuncture - Points placed at the hands, feet, wrists, and ankles along the meridians that supply the affected areas. For foot neuropathy, the Kidney, Bladder, Liver, Gallbladder, Stomach, and Spleen meridians are all involved depending on where the numbness and pain are concentrated. For hand neuropathy, the Heart, Pericardium, Lung, Large Intestine, Small Intestine, and Triple Burner channels. Hristina also uses systemic points that improve overall circulation, nourish the blood, and support nerve health. Many patients feel improved sensation or reduced burning within the first few sessions.
Electroacupuncture - Gentle electrical stimulation applied to points on the hands and feet to directly stimulate damaged nerve fibers and promote nerve regeneration. Research has shown electroacupuncture to improve nerve conduction velocity, increase blood flow to peripheral nerves, and reduce neuropathic pain. Electroacupuncture is one of the most effective tools for neuropathy treatment because it provides the sustained, rhythmic nerve stimulation that promotes healing at the cellular level.
Moxibustion - Warming therapy applied to the hands, feet, and along the Kidney and Spleen meridians to improve circulation to the extremities and address the Cold and yang deficiency patterns common in neuropathy. For patients whose numbness worsens in cold weather or who feel a persistent coldness in their feet, moxibustion can produce immediate warming and improved sensation.
Cupping - Applied to the calves, forearms, and back to improve blood flow through the limbs and release muscular tension that may be compressing nerves. For diabetic neuropathy patients, improving circulation through the lower legs is critical for both nerve health and wound prevention.
Chinese Herbal Medicine - Custom formulas that nourish the blood, improve microcirculation, reduce nerve inflammation, and support nerve regeneration. For diabetic neuropathy, herbs that also help regulate blood sugar and protect the blood vessels that supply the nerves. For chemotherapy-induced neuropathy, formulas that clear toxins while rebuilding the blood and qi that chemotherapy depletes. Herbal medicine provides the continuous daily nerve support that weekly acupuncture sessions complement but cannot replace on their own.
Hristina's training at Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine included neurological acupuncture, where peripheral neuropathy is one of the most commonly treated conditions. Her clinical work at John H. Stroger Hospital (Cook County) included treating patients with diabetic neuropathy, chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN), idiopathic neuropathy, and neuropathy connected to autoimmune and spinal conditions.
What to Expect at Your First Visit
Your first appointment at our Schaumburg office begins with a thorough assessment of your neuropathy symptoms, their cause (if known), and how they're affecting your daily life. Hristina will test sensation in your hands and feet, assess your balance and strength, and review any nerve conduction studies or lab work you've had. Her TCM assessment adds diagnostic information that helps guide treatment decisions.
Your first treatment will target the areas where your symptoms are most severe. Some patients notice improved sensation or reduced pain after the first session. For most, the improvement builds gradually over the first several weeks as nerve function is progressively restored.
Treatment plan: Neuropathy responds best to consistent, sustained treatment. Hristina typically recommends 2 sessions per week for the first 4-6 weeks, then weekly sessions for another 2-3 months. Most patients notice meaningful improvement in pain, tingling, or sensation within the first 4-8 sessions. A full course of 20-30 sessions is common for moderate to severe neuropathy. Maintenance sessions every 2-4 weeks help sustain improvements, especially for patients with ongoing causes like diabetes.
Session length: First visit is approximately 75-90 minutes including assessment. Follow-up sessions run 45-60 minutes.
Insurance: If you have BCBS or United Healthcare, your acupuncture sessions at our Schaumburg location are covered as an in-network benefit. Our front desk team can verify your coverage before your first appointment.
Who This Is For
Acupuncture for neuropathy at our Schaumburg location is a good fit if you:
- Have numbness, tingling, burning, or stabbing pain in your feet or hands
- Have been diagnosed with diabetic neuropathy and want treatment beyond blood sugar management and pain medication
- Are experiencing chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) and need help managing or recovering from nerve damage
- Take gabapentin or pregabalin and find the side effects (drowsiness, fog, weight gain) difficult to tolerate
- Have idiopathic neuropathy where no cause has been identified
- Experience loss of balance or difficulty walking due to reduced sensation in your feet
- Have neuropathy connected to autoimmune conditions, B12 deficiency, or spinal problems
- Want to improve nerve function rather than just masking the pain
- Are concerned about falls due to numbness and balance problems in your feet
Who This May Not Be For
If you have new onset of rapidly progressing numbness or weakness in both legs moving upward, this may indicate Guillain-Barre syndrome or another condition requiring urgent neurological evaluation. If you have neuropathy with open wounds or ulcers on your feet (common in advanced diabetic neuropathy), please ensure you're working with a podiatrist or wound care specialist alongside any complementary treatment. If your neuropathy symptoms are new and you haven't had them evaluated, Hristina may recommend you see your doctor for bloodwork and possibly nerve conduction studies to identify the cause before beginning treatment.
