Why Acupuncture Alongside IVF and IUI
Fertility clinics are excellent at the science of reproduction. They monitor your follicles, optimize your medication protocol, and time your procedure precisely. But there are factors that influence IVF and IUI success that fall outside the scope of what your clinic can control. Blood flow to the uterus affects endometrial lining thickness and quality. Stress hormones like cortisol can interfere with implantation. The side effects of fertility medications, including bloating, mood swings, headaches, and fatigue, can take a toll on your body and your emotional resilience. Sleep disruption and anxiety during the two-week wait affect your nervous system in ways that can work against the outcome you're hoping for.
This is where acupuncture fills the gap. It doesn't replace anything your fertility clinic is doing. It supports your body's ability to respond to the treatment, handle the medications, and create the conditions that give an embryo the best chance of implanting and developing.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, fertility depends on the health of the Kidney system (which governs reproduction and hormonal balance), the Liver system (which ensures smooth flow of qi and blood and regulates the menstrual cycle), and the Spleen system (which produces the blood and energy needed to nourish the uterine lining). When these systems are working well, the body responds better to fertility medications, produces healthier eggs, builds a thicker and more receptive lining, and maintains the hormonal balance needed to sustain early pregnancy. When one or more of these systems is depleted or stagnant, even a perfectly timed procedure can struggle to succeed.
How We Support IVF and IUI at Our Schaumburg Office
Hristina works with your fertility clinic's timeline, not against it. She'll ask where you are in your cycle, what medications you're taking, what your clinic's protocol looks like, and what your specific concerns are. She performs TCM diagnostics, including pulse and tongue assessment, to identify which organ systems need the most support and tailors her treatment accordingly.
Acupuncture support for IVF and IUI is typically structured around the phases of your cycle and your treatment timeline:
Pre-cycle preparation (1-3 months before transfer) - The ideal scenario is to begin acupuncture before your IVF or IUI cycle starts. During this phase, treatment focuses on regulating your menstrual cycle, improving egg quality, building uterine lining thickness, reducing stress, and bringing your body into the best possible condition for the procedure. Hristina uses points along the Kidney, Liver, and Spleen meridians to strengthen reproductive function, improve blood flow to the ovaries and uterus, and balance hormones naturally.
During stimulation (IVF medication phase) - Once you begin fertility medications, acupuncture shifts to supporting your body through the side effects and maximizing your response to the drugs. Treatment focuses on reducing bloating, managing headaches and mood swings, supporting follicle development, and keeping stress hormones in check. Points are adjusted based on where you are in the stimulation phase and how your body is responding.
Around transfer day (IVF) or insemination (IUI) - Acupuncture before and after embryo transfer or insemination is one of the most well-studied applications of fertility acupuncture. Treatment on transfer day focuses on increasing blood flow to the uterus, relaxing the uterine muscles, calming the nervous system, and creating the most receptive environment for implantation. Many fertility clinics recommend acupuncture on transfer day specifically because of the research supporting improved outcomes.
Two-week wait and early pregnancy support - After transfer or insemination, treatment shifts to supporting implantation, calming anxiety, maintaining progesterone levels, and reducing the risk of early pregnancy loss. Hristina uses gentle, nourishing points during this phase and avoids any points traditionally contraindicated in early pregnancy.
Additional modalities may include:
Moxibustion - Warming therapy applied at key reproductive points to improve blood circulation to the uterus and support Kidney yang, which governs the warming, holding energy needed to sustain early pregnancy. Moxibustion is particularly helpful for patients with a history of thin lining, cold constitution, or luteal phase deficiency.
Chinese Herbal Medicine - Custom formulas prescribed during the preparation phase to improve egg quality, build blood, strengthen the uterine lining, and balance hormones. Herbal medicine is typically paused during the active IVF medication phase to avoid any interaction with fertility drugs, then may be resumed after transfer if appropriate. All herbal prescriptions are coordinated with your fertility clinic's protocol.
Electroacupuncture - Used selectively during the preparation phase to improve ovarian blood flow and support follicle development. Electroacupuncture is not used around transfer day or during the two-week wait, as the stimulation is too strong for that delicate phase.
Hristina's training at Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine included the traditional Chinese approach to gynecology and reproductive medicine, which has been a specialized discipline within TCM for over a thousand years. Her clinical experience at John H. Stroger Hospital (Cook County) and in private practice includes supporting patients through multiple IVF and IUI cycles, including cases involving diminished ovarian reserve, recurrent implantation failure, and repeated pregnancy loss.
What to Expect at Your First Visit
Your first appointment at our Schaumburg office begins with Hristina understanding your fertility journey so far. She'll ask about your diagnosis, how many cycles you've been through, what medications you've used, and how your body has responded. She'll also ask about your menstrual cycle history, stress levels, sleep, digestion, and emotional health, because all of these influence fertility outcomes.
Her TCM assessment provides a different lens on your reproductive health than your fertility clinic offers. Pulse and tongue reading can reveal patterns like blood deficiency, Kidney yang depletion, or Liver qi stagnation that directly affect egg quality, lining thickness, and implantation. This information allows her to target her treatment precisely.
If your IVF or IUI cycle is already underway, Hristina can begin supporting you immediately and will coordinate with your timeline. If you have time before your next cycle, starting 1-3 months in advance gives the best results.
Treatment plan: For pre-cycle preparation, 1 session per week for 1-3 months leading up to your cycle. During your active IVF or IUI cycle, 1-2 sessions per week depending on where you are in the protocol. On transfer or insemination day, a session before and after the procedure if scheduling allows. During the two-week wait, 1 session per week for support. If pregnancy is achieved, many patients continue weekly sessions through the first trimester for ongoing support.
Session length: First visit is approximately 75-90 minutes including assessment. Follow-up sessions run 45-60 minutes.
Insurance: If you have BCBS or United Healthcare, your acupuncture sessions at our Schaumburg location are covered as an in-network benefit. Our front desk team can verify your coverage before your first appointment.

Who This May Not Be For
Acupuncture for fertility support works best as a complement to your reproductive endocrinologist's care, not as a replacement for it. If you haven't yet had a fertility evaluation and are unsure why you're having difficulty conceiving, we recommend starting with your OB-GYN or a fertility specialist first. If you have an active ectopic pregnancy, severe ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), or unexplained heavy bleeding during a treatment cycle, please contact your fertility clinic immediately. Once any acute issues are managed, Hristina is happy to support your ongoing care.
