If you've been diagnosed with PCOS or told your hormones are "off" without a clear solution beyond birth control pills, you're not alone and you're not out of options. At Acupuncture Divine Flow in Schaumburg, Hristina Dimova treats irregular cycles and PCOS by restoring hormonal balance, supporting ovulation, and correcting the internal patterns that keep your reproductive system from functioning normally.

Why Your Cycle Is Irregular and Why Birth Control Isn't the Answer

A healthy menstrual cycle runs between 26 and 32 days, with ovulation happening predictably in the middle. When cycles are shorter than 24 days, longer than 35 days, completely absent, or varying wildly from month to month, something in the hormonal chain is broken. The problem is that most conventional approaches don't try to fix the chain. They bypass it.

Birth control pills are the most commonly prescribed treatment for irregular periods and PCOS. They create an artificial cycle that looks regular on the calendar, but they don't address the underlying hormonal imbalance. When you stop taking them, the same irregular pattern returns because nothing has changed internally. Metformin is sometimes prescribed for PCOS to improve insulin sensitivity, which can help, but it doesn't work for every patient and it comes with digestive side effects that many women find difficult to tolerate.

PCOS in particular is a complex condition that involves more than just the ovaries. It's driven by insulin resistance, elevated androgens (male hormones), chronic low-grade inflammation, and often disrupted communication between the brain and the ovaries. The cysts that give the condition its name are actually follicles that started developing but never matured enough to ovulate. They're a symptom of the problem, not the cause.

Traditional Chinese Medicine treats irregular cycles and PCOS by identifying which systems are out of balance and correcting them. In TCM, regular menstruation depends on the Kidney system (which governs the reproductive hormones and the monthly cycle), the Liver system (which ensures the smooth flow of qi and blood and regulates the timing of ovulation and menstruation), and the Spleen system (which transforms food into blood and energy and prevents the accumulation of dampness and phlegm that characterizes PCOS). Most patients have a combination of deficiency in one system and stagnation or excess in another. Identifying your specific pattern is what makes treatment effective.

How We Treat Irregular Cycles and PCOS at Our Schaumburg Office

Hristina's evaluation goes deep into your menstrual history. She'll ask about the length and regularity of your cycles, the quality and quantity of your flow, whether you experience clotting, cramping, or spotting between periods, and whether you have signs of ovulation like cervical mucus changes or basal body temperature shifts. She'll also ask about acne, hair growth patterns, weight distribution, energy levels, digestion, and emotional health, all of which provide diagnostic information in both Western and Chinese medicine. Her pulse and tongue assessment helps identify the specific TCM pattern driving your cycle irregularity.

Treatment is structured around the phases of your menstrual cycle, because what your body needs during menstruation is different from what it needs during the follicular phase, ovulation, and the luteal phase:

Menstrual phase (days 1-5) - Treatment focuses on ensuring complete and smooth shedding of the uterine lining, reducing cramping, and moving any blood stagnation. Points along the Liver, Spleen, and Ren (Conception Vessel) meridians encourage downward flow and prevent stagnation that can disrupt the next cycle.

Follicular phase (days 6-12) - Treatment shifts to nourishing blood and yin to support follicle development and endometrial lining growth. Kidney and Liver points are used to promote the hormonal signals that mature a dominant follicle and prepare for ovulation.

Ovulation phase (days 12-16) - Treatment focuses on moving qi and blood to trigger the release of the egg. This is a critical transition in the cycle, and acupuncture helps ensure the shift from yin (building) to yang (releasing) happens smoothly. For PCOS patients who aren't ovulating, this phase of treatment is especially important.

Luteal phase (days 17-28) - Treatment supports progesterone production and Kidney yang to maintain the uterine lining and prepare for either implantation or a healthy period. For patients with short luteal phases or low progesterone, warming points and moxibustion are used to strengthen the holding energy needed during this phase.

Additional modalities:

Electroacupuncture - Used during the follicular and ovulation phases to improve ovarian blood flow and stimulate the hormonal feedback loop between the brain and the ovaries. Research on electroacupuncture for PCOS has shown improvements in ovulation rates, menstrual regularity, and hormonal markers including reduced testosterone and improved insulin sensitivity.

Moxibustion - Warming therapy applied at Kidney and Spleen points to strengthen yang energy, support ovulation, and improve the body's ability to transform fluids and prevent the phlegm-dampness accumulation that is central to PCOS. Moxibustion is especially helpful for patients who feel cold, bloated, or heavy, and whose cycles tend to be long and infrequent.

Chinese Herbal Medicine - Custom formulas that change with each phase of your cycle to provide continuous hormonal support. During the follicular phase, blood-nourishing herbs to support follicle growth. Around ovulation, qi-moving herbs to encourage egg release. During the luteal phase, warming and holding herbs to support progesterone. For PCOS specifically, herbs that address phlegm-dampness, improve insulin sensitivity, and reduce androgen levels. Herbal medicine is one of the most powerful tools for cycle regulation because it works every day between acupuncture sessions.

Hristina's training at Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine included specialized study in TCM gynecology, which is one of the most well-developed branches of traditional Chinese medical practice. Her clinical experience includes treating patients with PCOS, amenorrhea (absent periods), oligomenorrhea (infrequent periods), anovulatory cycles, and irregular cycles connected to thyroid conditions, postpartum recovery, coming off birth control, and perimenopause.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Your first appointment at our Schaumburg office begins with a thorough review of your menstrual and hormonal history. Hristina will want to see any lab work you've had done, including hormone panels, ultrasound results, and any PCOS-related testing. If you've been tracking your cycles with an app or basal body temperature charting, bring that information along. The more data she has, the more precisely she can identify your pattern and design your treatment.

After her TCM assessment, she'll explain which pattern she's identified and outline a treatment plan that's structured around your cycle phases. Your first treatment will be tailored to wherever you are in your cycle that day.

Treatment plan: Cycle regulation takes time. Hristina typically recommends 1 session per week for a minimum of 3 menstrual cycles (approximately 3 months) to see meaningful and lasting changes. For PCOS or absent periods, a longer course of 4-6 months is common. Most patients notice their first improvements, such as reduced PMS symptoms, less painful periods, or a more predictable cycle length, within the first 1-2 cycles of treatment. Ovulation in previously anovulatory patients may take 2-4 months to establish.

Session length: First visit is approximately 75-90 minutes including assessment. Follow-up sessions run 45-60 minutes.

Insurance: If you have BCBS or United Healthcare, your acupuncture sessions at our Schaumburg location are covered as an in-network benefit. Our front desk team can verify your coverage before your first appointment.

Who This Is For

Acupuncture for irregular cycles and PCOS at our Schaumburg location is a good fit if you:

  • Have been diagnosed with PCOS and want treatment that addresses the root cause, not just symptom management
  • Have irregular periods (shorter than 24 days, longer than 35 days, or unpredictable)
  • Have absent periods (amenorrhea) and want to restore your natural cycle
  • Are not ovulating or ovulating irregularly and want to improve your fertility naturally
  • Have come off birth control and your cycle hasn't returned to normal
  • Experience PCOS symptoms like acne, excess hair growth, weight gain, or thinning hair
  • Have been told to "just go on the pill" and want a different approach
  • Are trying to conceive and need your cycle to regulate before pursuing fertility treatment
  • Have insulin resistance or blood sugar issues connected to your PCOS
  • Want to complement your endocrinologist's care with treatment that supports your body holistically

Who This May Not Be For

If you're experiencing very heavy bleeding that soaks through a pad or tampon every hour, bleeding that lasts longer than 10 days, or sudden onset of severe pelvic pain, please contact your gynecologist or go to urgent care. These symptoms may indicate a condition that requires immediate medical evaluation. If you have irregular cycles and haven't had a gynecological evaluation yet, we recommend starting with your OB-GYN to rule out structural issues like fibroids, polyps, or thyroid conditions that may need specific medical management. Once your baseline evaluation is complete, acupuncture is an excellent treatment for restoring hormonal balance and cycle regularity.
