When Getting Pregnant Isn't Happening the Way You Expected
You assumed it would happen naturally. Most people do. But months have passed, maybe a year or more, and you're starting to wonder if something is wrong. Your OB-GYN ran bloodwork and maybe an ultrasound. Perhaps everything came back normal, which is almost more frustrating because at least a diagnosis gives you something to work with. Or maybe you've been told you have low ovarian reserve, irregular ovulation, thin uterine lining, elevated FSH, PCOS, or unexplained infertility, and you're weighing your options.
The conventional fertility path can feel like an escalator you can't step off. Timed intercourse becomes Clomid, Clomid becomes Letrozole, Letrozole becomes IUI, IUI becomes IVF. Each step is more expensive, more invasive, and more emotionally draining. And at every step, the focus is almost entirely on the mechanics of reproduction, ovulation timing, sperm count, embryo quality, while the underlying health of your body, your stress levels, your sleep, your hormonal balance, and your emotional wellbeing are treated as secondary.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, fertility is not treated as an isolated reproductive issue. It's understood as a reflection of your overall health, particularly the strength of your Kidney essence (which governs reproductive vitality and egg quality), the smooth flow of Liver qi (which regulates your menstrual cycle and hormonal signaling), the nourishment of your Blood (which builds the uterine lining and sustains early pregnancy), and the stability of your Spleen qi (which transforms the nutrients that fuel every stage of conception). When one or more of these systems is depleted or stagnant, fertility struggles are often the result. Restoring balance to these systems is what allows your body to conceive, not by forcing a process, but by creating the internal conditions where conception becomes possible.
How We Support Fertility at Our Schaumburg Office
Fertility treatment at our Schaumburg clinic is not a generic relaxation session. Hristina begins with a comprehensive assessment that includes your complete reproductive history (cycle length, flow quality, ovulation patterns, previous pregnancies or losses, any diagnoses), your Western medical workup (bloodwork, ultrasounds, HSG results, your partner's semen analysis if available), and a full Traditional Chinese Medicine evaluation including pulse diagnosis and tongue assessment. This combined picture tells her which organ systems need support and what your body needs to conceive.
Based on that evaluation, your treatment will typically include several modalities working together, timed strategically to your menstrual cycle:
Acupuncture - Point selection changes throughout your cycle to support each phase of conception. During the follicular phase (days 1-13), treatment focuses on building Blood and nourishing Kidney yin to support follicle development and endometrial growth. Points like Guanyuan (CV 4), Zigong (extra point), and Sanyinjiao (SP 6) improve blood flow to the uterus and ovaries. Around ovulation (days 13-15), treatment shifts to promoting the smooth release of the egg by moving Liver qi and warming Kidney yang. During the luteal phase (days 15-28), the focus moves to supporting implantation by warming the uterus, calming the mind, and sustaining progesterone levels through the body's own production. This cycle-based approach means you're receiving different treatment at each visit, precisely matched to what your reproductive system needs at that moment.
Electroacupuncture - Research published in fertility and reproductive medicine journals has shown that electroacupuncture applied to abdominal and sacral points increases uterine artery blood flow, which directly influences endometrial thickness and receptivity. For patients with thin lining (under 8mm), poor ovarian response, or PCOS-related anovulation, electroacupuncture at specific frequencies helps regulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis, the hormonal feedback loop that controls ovulation. Hristina uses electroacupuncture selectively during the follicular phase and around ovulation when increased blood flow and hormonal regulation matter most.
Chinese Herbal Medicine - Custom herbal formulas are one of the most powerful tools in fertility treatment because they work between your acupuncture sessions, providing daily support to the organ systems that govern reproduction. Classical fertility formulas nourish Kidney essence and jing (your deep reproductive reserves), build Blood to thicken the uterine lining, regulate the Liver to smooth hormonal transitions between cycle phases, and strengthen the Spleen to improve nutrient absorption and energy. Hristina adjusts your formula as your cycle responds to treatment, and all formulas are reviewed for safety and compatibility with any Western fertility medications you may be taking.
Moxibustion - The warming of specific acupuncture points using dried mugwort (moxa) is particularly important in fertility treatment. Many fertility patients in TCM present with a pattern called "cold uterus," which manifests as painful periods with clotting, cold hands and feet, and difficulty with implantation. Moxibustion applied to points on the lower abdomen and sacrum warms the uterus, improves local circulation, and creates a more hospitable environment for embryo implantation. This is especially relevant during Schaumburg's long winters, when cold exposure can exacerbate underlying cold patterns.
Stress Reduction - This isn't a wellness add-on. Elevated cortisol directly interferes with GnRH (gonadotropin-releasing hormone), which disrupts the hormonal cascade needed for ovulation and implantation. The fertility journey itself creates enormous stress, which creates a frustrating feedback loop: the stress of trying to conceive makes it harder to conceive. Every acupuncture session activates your parasympathetic nervous system, shifting your body out of fight-or-flight and into the rest-and-repair state where reproductive function is prioritized. Many patients tell us their fertility acupuncture sessions are the only time during their cycle they feel genuinely calm.
Hristina brings 11 years of clinical experience to every treatment, including advanced training at Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine in China and hands-on work at John H. Stroger Hospital (Cook County). She has supported hundreds of patients through natural conception, medicated cycles, IUI, and IVF, and maintains close collaboration with reproductive endocrinologists and OB-GYNs across the Chicagoland area.
What to Expect at Your First Visit
Your initial appointment at our Schaumburg office is thorough and unhurried. Hristina will spend significant time understanding your reproductive history, your cycle patterns, any diagnoses you've received, your emotional state, and your goals. She wants to know what your periods look like (length, flow, color, clotting, pain), how you sleep, how your digestion works, where you carry stress, and what your energy levels are throughout the month. All of this informs her TCM diagnosis.
She'll perform a detailed pulse assessment and tongue examination. In fertility patients, the pulse often reveals specific patterns. A thin or choppy pulse may indicate Blood deficiency affecting the uterine lining. A wiry pulse points to Liver qi stagnation disrupting ovulation. A deep and weak pulse suggests Kidney essence depletion. These findings guide her entire treatment strategy and allow her to treat you as a complete person, not just a set of lab values.
From there, you'll receive your first treatment, timed to wherever you are in your current cycle. The needles are extremely thin and most patients feel little to no discomfort. You'll rest comfortably for 20-30 minutes. Many fertility patients describe the session as the most relaxed they've felt since they started trying to conceive.
Treatment plan: For natural conception support, Hristina typically recommends weekly sessions for 3-4 months (approximately 3 full menstrual cycles) to meaningfully shift your hormonal patterns and egg quality. It takes roughly 90 days for a developing follicle to mature, which is why the 3-month commitment matters. For patients preparing for IVF or IUI, treatment ideally begins 2-3 months before your transfer or insemination cycle, with increased frequency around retrieval and transfer.
Session length: First visit is approximately 75-90 minutes including assessment. Follow-up sessions run 45-60 minutes.
Insurance: If you have BCBS or United Healthcare, your acupuncture sessions at our Schaumburg location are covered as an in-network benefit. Our front desk team can verify your coverage before your first appointment so there are no surprises. Given that fertility treatment often involves multiple sessions over several months, insurance coverage can make a significant financial difference.

Fertility acupuncture works at every stage of the journey. If you're already deep into medicated cycles or ART (assisted reproductive technology), acupuncture enhances the effectiveness of those treatments. And once you do conceive, Hristina offers pregnancy support acupuncture to help with nausea, fatigue, and a healthy first trimester.
For a deeper understanding of how Chinese Medicine approaches fertility, Hristina has written a comprehensive fertility guide available through our website.
Who This May Not Be For
If you are experiencing sudden severe pelvic pain, heavy unexpected bleeding, dizziness, or symptoms that could indicate an ectopic pregnancy, please seek emergency medical care immediately. Acupuncture is a complement to reproductive medicine, not a replacement for it. Hristina works alongside your OB-GYN or reproductive endocrinologist and will always refer you for additional medical evaluation when appropriate. If you don't currently have a fertility specialist and need a referral, she can recommend trusted providers in the Schaumburg and greater Chicagoland area.
