Why Endometriosis Pain Is So Difficult to Control

Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, attaching to the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bladder, bowel, or pelvic walls. This tissue responds to your menstrual hormones just like the lining inside the uterus, swelling and bleeding with each cycle. But because it has nowhere to drain, it causes inflammation, scar tissue, adhesions, and pain that can range from debilitating cramping to constant pelvic aching that persists throughout the month.

The average time from symptom onset to diagnosis is 7-10 years. During that time, most women are told their pain is normal, prescribed stronger and stronger painkillers, and put on birth control to suppress their cycles. Even after diagnosis, the options are limited. Hormonal medications can slow the growth of endometrial tissue but come with significant side effects and don't work for everyone. Laparoscopic surgery can remove visible lesions, but endometriosis frequently grows back. Many women cycle through rounds of medication and surgery without ever feeling fully in control of their pain or their bodies.

Traditional Chinese Medicine views endometriosis primarily as a condition of blood stagnation. When blood fails to flow smoothly through the pelvis, it accumulates, thickens, and creates the masses and adhesions that characterize the disease. But the question TCM asks is why the blood is stagnating. The answer usually involves a combination of Liver qi stagnation from chronic stress and emotional suppression, Cold in the uterus that constricts blood vessels and slows circulation, and Kidney deficiency that weakens the body's ability to regulate the menstrual cycle properly. Many endometriosis patients also have an element of Spleen deficiency with dampness, which contributes to the inflammatory environment where abnormal tissue growth thrives. Treating these root patterns alongside managing the pain is what allows acupuncture to produce improvements that medication alone often cannot.

How We Treat Endometriosis at Our Schaumburg Office

Hristina understands that endometriosis is more than painful periods. She'll ask about your full symptom picture, including pain during intercourse, bowel and bladder symptoms around your period, fatigue, the emotional toll of living with a chronic condition, and whether fertility is a concern. She performs pulse and tongue assessment to identify which TCM patterns are contributing to your endometriosis, because the treatment for Cold-stagnation endometriosis is very different from the treatment for Heat-inflammation endometriosis.

Treatment is structured around your menstrual cycle to target the right patterns at the right time:

Premenstrual and menstrual phase - This is when endometriosis pain peaks for most patients. Treatment focuses on strongly moving blood stagnation, reducing inflammation, relaxing pelvic muscles, and managing pain. Points along the Liver, Spleen, and Ren meridians are used to promote circulation through the pelvis and encourage the smooth shedding of the uterine lining. Acupuncture during this phase can significantly reduce cramping intensity and duration.

Follicular and ovulation phase - Treatment shifts to nourishing blood and yin, strengthening the Kidney system, and addressing any underlying deficiency that allows the endometrial tissue to proliferate. This phase of treatment supports the body's ability to regulate the immune and hormonal environment in the pelvis.

Modalities include:

Acupuncture - Points selected based on your pattern to reduce pelvic stagnation, calm inflammation, and regulate the immune response. Hristina uses both local points on the lower abdomen and lower back and distal points on the hands, feet, and ears that have a powerful effect on pelvic blood flow and pain signaling. For patients whose endometriosis affects the bowel or bladder, specific meridian points that address those organs are added to the protocol.

Electroacupuncture - Applied to abdominal and sacral points to provide stronger pain relief and improve blood circulation through the pelvis. Research has shown electroacupuncture to reduce endometriosis-related pain and decrease inflammatory markers in the pelvic cavity. Electroacupuncture is particularly valuable during the menstrual phase when pain is most severe.

Moxibustion - Warming therapy applied to the lower abdomen and lower back for patients whose endometriosis pattern includes Cold stagnation. If your pain feels better with a heating pad, worsens in cold weather, or comes with a cold sensation in the pelvis, moxibustion is likely to be a central part of your treatment. The warmth improves blood circulation, relaxes pelvic muscles, and helps dissolve the stagnation that feeds endometrial lesions.

Cupping - Applied to the lower back and sacral area to relieve the deep, aching back pain that often accompanies endometriosis. Cupping also improves circulation to the kidneys and pelvic organs, supporting the body's ability to clear inflammation and stagnation.

Chinese Herbal Medicine - Custom formulas that provide daily support for endometriosis management. Blood-moving herbs reduce stagnation and adhesion formation. Anti-inflammatory herbs calm the pelvic environment. Kidney-nourishing herbs support hormonal regulation. Herbal medicine is especially important for endometriosis because the condition is active every day, not just during your period, and daily herbal support addresses the disease process between acupuncture sessions.

Hristina's training at Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine included TCM gynecology, where blood stagnation disorders like endometriosis are among the most commonly treated conditions. Her clinical experience includes treating patients with mild to severe endometriosis, including those preparing for or recovering from laparoscopic surgery and those managing endometriosis alongside fertility treatment.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Your first appointment at our Schaumburg office is a chance to work with someone who takes your pain seriously and understands the complexity of endometriosis. Hristina will review your diagnosis, surgical history if applicable, current medications, and the full scope of how endometriosis affects your life. Her TCM assessment adds another layer of understanding that helps guide treatment decisions.

Your first treatment will be tailored to where you are in your cycle and which symptoms are most urgent. If you're in the middle of a painful flare, the first session focuses on pain relief. If you're between periods, it focuses on reducing the stagnation and inflammation that will drive the next flare.

Treatment plan: Endometriosis is a chronic condition that responds best to consistent, long-term treatment. Hristina typically recommends 1-2 sessions per week for the first 3 menstrual cycles (approximately 3 months), then reassesses. Most patients notice reduced pain severity and fewer pain days within the first 1-2 cycles. A full course of 4-6 months is common, with many patients continuing maintenance sessions every 2-4 weeks for ongoing management.

Session length: First visit is approximately 75-90 minutes including assessment. Follow-up sessions run 45-60 minutes.

Insurance: If you have BCBS or United Healthcare, your acupuncture sessions at our Schaumburg location are covered as an in-network benefit. Our front desk team can verify your coverage before your first appointment.

Who This Is For

Acupuncture for endometriosis at our Schaumburg location is a good fit if you:

  • Have been diagnosed with endometriosis and need better pain management
  • Experience severe menstrual cramps, pelvic pain between periods, or pain during intercourse
  • Have had laparoscopic surgery and your endometriosis has returned or you want to prevent recurrence
  • Are on hormonal medication for endometriosis and want complementary support for remaining symptoms
  • Deal with bowel or bladder symptoms (pain, urgency, bloating) connected to your endometriosis
  • Experience fatigue, brain fog, or emotional exhaustion from living with chronic pain
  • Have endometriosis-related infertility and want to improve your pelvic environment before pursuing IVF or IUI
  • Are looking for a drug-free way to reduce your reliance on painkillers each month
  • Want a practitioner who understands endometriosis as a whole-body condition, not just a pelvic problem

Who This May Not Be For

If you're experiencing sudden, severe pelvic pain that is significantly different from your usual endometriosis pain, pain with fever, or heavy bleeding with dizziness or fainting, please seek emergency medical care. These symptoms may indicate an ovarian cyst rupture, torsion, or other condition requiring immediate evaluation. If you suspect you have endometriosis but haven't been evaluated yet, Hristina can begin treating your symptoms while recommending you see a gynecologist for diagnostic workup. Acupuncture works well alongside surgical and medical management of endometriosis at every stage.
