Why Chemotherapy Side Effects Are So Difficult to Manage

Chemotherapy drugs are designed to kill rapidly dividing cancer cells. The problem is that healthy cells in your digestive tract, bone marrow, hair follicles, and nervous system also divide rapidly, and chemotherapy damages them too. This collateral damage creates the side effects that make treatment so grueling: nausea and vomiting, profound fatigue, mouth sores, neuropathy in the hands and feet, weakened immunity, pain, insomnia, anxiety, depression, and cognitive changes known as "chemo brain."

Your oncologist has anti-nausea medication, steroids, and other supportive drugs to manage the worst of these effects. These help, but they don't prevent all symptoms and they add their own side effects to the mix. Constipation from anti-nausea drugs, insomnia from steroids, and the cumulative toll of multiple medications on a body already under siege from chemotherapy. Many patients find that as cycles progress, the side effects become harder to manage and recovery between treatments takes longer.

Acupuncture is one of the most well-researched complementary therapies in oncology. Major cancer centers including Memorial Sloan Kettering, MD Anderson, and Dana-Farber integrate acupuncture into their supportive care programs because the evidence for managing chemotherapy side effects is strong. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, chemotherapy is understood as a powerful but toxic intervention that depletes the body's qi, blood, and essence while introducing toxic heat into the system. Treatment focuses on protecting and rebuilding these vital resources while clearing the toxicity, helping the body tolerate treatment better and recover faster between cycles.

How We Support Cancer Patients at Our Schaumburg Office

Hristina is clear about her role: she does not treat cancer. She treats the person going through cancer treatment. Her goal is to help you tolerate chemotherapy better, maintain your strength and quality of life, and recover more fully between cycles so your oncologist can deliver the treatment plan as intended without dose reductions or delays caused by side effects.

She'll ask about your cancer type, treatment protocol, current medications, and which side effects are most affecting your quality of life. Her TCM assessment identifies which organ systems have been most depleted by treatment and guides the priority of care.

Acupuncture can help with the following chemotherapy side effects:

Nausea and vomiting - This is the most well-studied application of acupuncture in oncology. Points on the Pericardium and Stomach meridians, particularly the point Pericardium 6 (Neiguan) on the inner wrist, have been shown in multiple clinical trials to significantly reduce chemotherapy-induced nausea. Hristina combines this with additional Stomach and Spleen points to restore normal digestive function and improve appetite.

Fatigue - Chemotherapy-related fatigue is different from normal tiredness because rest doesn't resolve it. Acupuncture at Spleen, Stomach, and Kidney points strengthens the body's energy production and helps rebuild the qi and blood that chemotherapy depletes. Many patients report improved energy levels within the first few sessions, which can make a significant difference in daily functioning and quality of life during treatment.

Neuropathy - Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) causes numbness, tingling, and burning in the hands and feet that can persist long after treatment ends. Electroacupuncture at points on the hands, feet, and along the affected meridians can improve nerve function, reduce pain, and in some cases prevent neuropathy from worsening during ongoing treatment.

Pain - Whether from the cancer itself, surgical recovery, or treatment side effects, acupuncture provides effective pain management without adding more medication. Electroacupuncture stimulates endorphin production and modulates pain signaling, reducing the need for opioid and prescription pain medication.

Insomnia and anxiety - Cancer treatment disrupts sleep through a combination of physical discomfort, steroid side effects, and the anxiety of living with a serious diagnosis. Acupuncture at Heart, Kidney, and Liver points calms the nervous system, improves sleep quality, and reduces the hypervigilance that keeps cancer patients awake at night.

Immune support - Chemotherapy suppresses the immune system, increasing vulnerability to infections that can delay treatment. Acupuncture at Spleen, Lung, and Kidney points supports white blood cell recovery and strengthens the body's defensive energy between cycles.

Chemo brain - Cognitive changes including difficulty concentrating, memory problems, and mental fog are common during and after chemotherapy. Scalp acupuncture and points along the Du meridian and Kidney channel support brain function and help clear the cognitive haze.

Additional modalities:

Moxibustion - Warming therapy at Spleen and Kidney points to rebuild depleted energy and support immune function. Moxibustion is especially helpful for patients who feel deeply cold, exhausted, and depleted during treatment.

Chinese Herbal Medicine - Formulas carefully selected to support recovery without interfering with chemotherapy. Hristina uses herbs that are safe alongside cancer treatment to strengthen digestion, build blood, reduce nausea, and support immune recovery. All herbal prescriptions are reviewed against your chemotherapy protocol, and Hristina coordinates with your oncology team when needed to ensure safety.

Hristina's clinical work at John H. Stroger Hospital (Cook County) included treating cancer patients receiving chemotherapy, radiation, and combined therapy. Her training at Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine included the integrative approach to oncology support that is standard practice in Chinese hospitals, where acupuncture is routinely used alongside Western cancer treatment.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Your first appointment at our Schaumburg office is gentle and unhurried. Hristina understands that you're already dealing with more medical appointments than you can count, and she'll make the experience as comfortable and restorative as possible. She'll review your treatment protocol, assess your current symptoms, and identify where acupuncture can provide the most immediate benefit.

Many patients schedule acupuncture sessions around their chemotherapy cycles for maximum benefit. Treatment 1-2 days before a cycle can prepare the body. Treatment 1-3 days after a cycle can manage acute side effects like nausea and fatigue. Regular sessions between cycles rebuild strength for the next round.

Treatment plan: Hristina typically recommends 1-2 sessions per week throughout your chemotherapy course, with timing coordinated around your treatment schedule. For acute nausea management, sessions on the day before and the day after chemotherapy are ideal. For ongoing fatigue, neuropathy, and quality of life support, weekly sessions between cycles. Treatment continues for as long as you're receiving chemotherapy and may extend into the post-treatment recovery period to address lingering side effects.

Session length: First visit is approximately 75-90 minutes including assessment. Follow-up sessions run 45-60 minutes.

Insurance: If you have BCBS or United Healthcare, your acupuncture sessions at our Schaumburg location are covered as an in-network benefit. Our front desk team can verify your coverage before your first appointment.

Who This Is For

Acupuncture for chemotherapy side effects at our Schaumburg location is a good fit if you:

  • Are currently receiving chemotherapy and struggling with nausea, fatigue, or other side effects
  • Want to maintain your quality of life and functional ability during cancer treatment
  • Experience chemotherapy-induced neuropathy in your hands or feet
  • Have insomnia, anxiety, or depression related to your cancer diagnosis and treatment
  • Want to support your immune system between chemotherapy cycles
  • Deal with mouth sores, loss of appetite, or digestive problems from treatment
  • Experience chemo brain and want cognitive support
  • Have completed chemotherapy but are still dealing with lingering side effects like fatigue and neuropathy
  • Want complementary support that works alongside your oncology care, not against it

Who This May Not Be For

If you're experiencing fever above 100.4 degrees during chemotherapy, this may indicate neutropenic fever, which is a medical emergency. Contact your oncologist or go to the emergency room immediately. If you have severely low platelet counts (your oncologist will advise you of your levels), acupuncture may need to be postponed until counts recover to reduce bleeding risk. Hristina always reviews your most recent blood work before treatment and will coordinate with your oncology team if there are any concerns. Acupuncture is a supportive therapy that works alongside your cancer treatment. It is not a substitute for chemotherapy, radiation, or any other cancer-directed treatment your oncologist has recommended.
