Living with Anxiety

If you're living with anxiety, you know it's more than just "feeling stressed." It's the racing heart when there's no danger. The thoughts that won't stop spinning at 3 AM. The tension you carry in your shoulders, jaw, and chest that never fully releases. It's the exhaustion of being on high alert all the time—even when you know, logically, that you're safe.

Anxiety affects your entire being—body, mind, and spirit. You might experience panic attacks, digestive issues, insomnia, difficulty concentrating, or a constant sense of dread. Over time, this chronic state of activation takes a toll on your health, relationships, and quality of life.

Many women who come to our Schaumburg clinic have tried talk therapy, medication, meditation apps, and countless self-help strategies. While these can be helpful, they often don't address the deeper dysregulation happening in the nervous system. That's where acupuncture offers something different—a way to calm your body at its root, helping you feel safe again from the inside out.

Common Anxiety Symptoms We Treat

  • Racing thoughts and worry
  • Panic attacks
  • Insomnia and sleep disturbances
  • Heart palpitations
  • Chest tightness and shallow breathing
  • Digestive upset (IBS, nausea)
  • Muscle tension and jaw clenching
  • Fatigue and exhaustion
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Feeling "wired but tired"

How Acupuncture Relieves Anxiety

Acupuncture works directly with your nervous system to shift your body out of "fight-or-flight" mode and into a state of calm. Here's how it helps:

Regulates the Nervous System

Acupuncture activates the parasympathetic nervous system—your body's "rest and digest" mode. This directly counteracts the chronic stress response that drives anxiety, helping your body remember what calm feels like.

Releases Natural Calming Chemicals

Research shows acupuncture stimulates the release of endorphins, serotonin, and GABA—your body's natural mood stabilizers and relaxation chemicals. This creates a sense of ease without medication side effects.

Reduces Physical Symptoms

Anxiety lives in the body—tight muscles, racing heart, shallow breath. Acupuncture releases muscular tension, regulates heart rate variability, and helps restore deep, natural breathing patterns.

Improves Sleep

Anxiety and insomnia often go hand-in-hand. By calming the mind and regulating your body's circadian rhythms, acupuncture helps you fall asleep easier and stay asleep longer—so you wake feeling restored.

Balances Hormones

Chronic anxiety disrupts cortisol and other stress hormones. Acupuncture helps regulate the HPA axis (your stress response system), bringing hormones back into balance for sustained emotional stability.

Addresses Root Causes

In Chinese medicine, anxiety often relates to imbalances in the Heart, Kidney, or Liver systems. We treat the root pattern—not just symptoms—for deeper, lasting relief.

What to Expect

1

Compassionate Consultation

Your first visit begins with a thorough conversation about your anxiety—when it started, how it shows up in your body, what triggers it, and what you've already tried. This isn't a rushed intake; it's a space to be truly heard. Hristina listens not just to your words, but to what your body is communicating.

2

Chinese Medicine Assessment

Using traditional diagnostic methods—including pulse reading and tongue observation—Hristina identifies the underlying patterns driving your anxiety. In Chinese medicine, anxiety can stem from different root causes, and your treatment will be tailored to your specific pattern.

3

Gentle Treatment

You'll rest comfortably while hair-thin needles are placed at specific points to calm your nervous system. Most patients feel a wave of relaxation wash over them within minutes. The treatment room is peaceful, warm, and designed to help your body feel safe.

4

Personalized Plan

After your session, you'll receive recommendations for ongoing care—which may include follow-up acupuncture, herbal support, flower essences, or lifestyle guidance. Most patients with anxiety benefit from weekly sessions initially, then gradually spacing out as symptoms improve.

Initial Visit: 75 minutes | $100
Follow-Up Visits: 60 minutes | $95

Anxiety & Acupuncture FAQs

Most patients feel noticeably calmer after their very first session—many describe it as a sense of relief they haven't felt in years. For lasting change, we typically recommend weekly sessions for 4-8 weeks, then gradually reducing frequency as your nervous system stabilizes. Chronic or severe anxiety may take longer, but most patients see meaningful improvement within 4-6 sessions.

Absolutely. Acupuncture works beautifully alongside medication and therapy. Many patients find that over time, with their doctor's guidance, they're able to reduce their medication dosage as acupuncture takes effect. We never recommend stopping medication without consulting your prescribing physician.

This is a very common concern! Acupuncture needles are nothing like medical needles—they're hair-thin and most insertions aren't felt at all. Hristina's approach is especially gentle and trauma-informed. She works slowly, explains everything, and creates a safe environment. Most needle-nervous patients are surprised by how relaxing the experience actually is.

At our Schaumburg location, we're in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield and United Healthcare, and out-of-network with Cigna and Aetna. Many plans now cover acupuncture for anxiety and stress-related conditions. Our front desk can help verify your benefits before your first visit.

Acupuncture can help with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety, panic disorder, health anxiety, performance anxiety, and anxiety related to trauma or PTSD. It's also effective for situational anxiety around life transitions, fertility treatments, or medical procedures. Whatever form your anxiety takes, acupuncture addresses the underlying nervous system dysregulation driving it.
