About Acupuncture

Most patients describe the sensation as a gentle tingling, mild pressure, or a dull ache that lasts only a moment. Acupuncture needles are hair-thin—much smaller than injection needles or even sewing needles. Many women find the experience deeply relaxing and even fall asleep during treatment. If you're nervous, I always go slowly and check in with you throughout the session.

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, acupuncture works by restoring the natural flow of Qi (energy) through pathways called meridians. When Qi is blocked or imbalanced, symptoms arise. Acupuncture gently removes these blockages and restores harmony.

From a Western perspective, acupuncture stimulates the nervous system, increases blood flow, reduces inflammation, and triggers the release of endorphins and other natural pain-relieving chemicals. It also helps regulate the autonomic nervous system, shifting the body from "fight or flight" into "rest and repair."

Yes, acupuncture is very safe when performed by a licensed acupuncturist. I use only sterile, single-use, disposable needles. Side effects are rare and typically mild—some patients experience slight bruising or temporary soreness at needle sites. Serious complications are extremely rare with a trained practitioner.

Acupuncture can help with a wide range of conditions. I specialize in treating:

  • Anxiety, depression, and PTSD
  • Fertility and women's health issues
  • Chronic pain (back, neck, headaches, migraines)
  • Digestive disorders
  • Insomnia and sleep issues
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Stress and nervous system dysregulation
  • Immune system support

The World Health Organization recognizes acupuncture as effective for over 100 conditions. If you're unsure whether acupuncture can help with your specific concern, please reach out—I'm happy to discuss.

Your First Visit

Your first visit is a sacred space for us to understand your whole story. We'll spend time discussing your health history, current concerns, lifestyle, and healing goals. I'll read your pulse (which tells me about your internal balance), observe your tongue (a window into your overall health), and sense your energy flow.

Based on this assessment, I'll explain my findings and create a personalized treatment plan. Then you'll receive your first acupuncture treatment. The initial visit typically lasts 75-90 minutes depending on location.

  • Eat a light meal 1-2 hours before your appointment (don't come on an empty stomach)
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing that can be rolled up to your elbows and knees
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol on the day of treatment
  • Arrive 10-15 minutes early if you haven't completed intake forms online
  • Bring a list of any medications, supplements, or herbs you're taking
  • Come with an open mind and any questions you have

This varies based on your unique situation, the nature of your condition, and how long you've been experiencing symptoms.

Acute conditions (recent injuries, sudden pain, acute stress) may improve significantly in 3-6 sessions.

Chronic conditions (long-standing issues, hormonal imbalances, emotional patterns) often benefit from 8-12 sessions or more for lasting results.

During your initial consultation, I'll give you a personalized recommendation. Many patients choose to continue with monthly maintenance sessions after their primary concerns are addressed.

For best results, I typically recommend:

  • Initial phase: 1-2 times per week for the first 3-4 weeks
  • Building phase: Once weekly for 4-6 weeks
  • Maintenance: Every 2-4 weeks or monthly

The exact frequency depends on your condition and how your body responds. We'll adjust your treatment plan as you progress.
