Acupuncture for Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis in Schaumburg, IL
Living with inflammatory bowel disease means living with uncertainty. You can be doing fine for weeks, then a flare hits and suddenly you're dealing with pain, urgency, bloody stools, and exhaustion that makes everything else in your life harder. Your medication may be controlling the disease on paper, but if you're still symptomatic, still fatigued, still anxious about what your gut will do next, you need more support than medication alone can provide. At Acupuncture Divine Flow in Schaumburg, Hristina Dimova works alongside your gastroenterologist to reduce inflammation, calm flares, manage pain, and strengthen the digestive system that IBD has weakened.

Why IBD Is About More Than Just Inflammation
Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are autoimmune conditions where the immune system attacks the lining of the digestive tract. The medical approach focuses on controlling that immune response with powerful medications: aminosalicylates, corticosteroids, immunomodulators, and biologics. These drugs can be lifesaving and are essential for managing moderate to severe disease. But they don't address everything.
Many IBD patients continue to experience symptoms even when their inflammatory markers improve. Fatigue that doesn't match your lab results. Abdominal pain and cramping between flares. Anxiety about eating because you don't know what will trigger symptoms. Joint pain, skin issues, and mood changes that your GI doctor attributes to the disease but can't specifically treat. The emotional toll of managing a chronic, unpredictable illness. The side effects of the medications themselves. IBD affects your whole body and your whole life, and a treatment plan that only targets intestinal inflammation leaves a lot of suffering unaddressed.
Traditional Chinese Medicine views IBD through a framework that accounts for this complexity. In TCM, Crohn's and colitis involve a combination of Spleen qi deficiency (the digestive system is fundamentally weakened and can't process food properly), damp-heat in the intestines (the inflammation, mucus, and bloody stools that characterize active flares), and Kidney yang deficiency (the deep exhaustion and inability to recover that comes from chronic disease). Many IBD patients also have significant Liver qi stagnation from the stress of living with a chronic condition, which directly worsens gut inflammation through the gut-brain axis. Treatment addresses each of these layers, not just the inflammation, which is why acupuncture can improve symptoms that medication alone cannot reach.
How We Support IBD Management at Our Schaumburg Office
Hristina is clear about one thing from the start: acupuncture does not replace your gastroenterologist's care or your IBD medication. It works alongside them. She'll ask about your diagnosis, your current medication regimen, your most recent labs and colonoscopy results, and what symptoms are affecting your quality of life most. Her TCM diagnostics, including pulse and tongue assessment, provide additional information about the state of your Spleen, Kidney, and Liver systems and help her design a treatment protocol that addresses the gaps your medication can't fill.
Treatment is adapted based on whether you're in an active flare or in remission:
During active flares - Treatment focuses on reducing intestinal inflammation, calming urgency and cramping, and managing pain. Points along the Stomach, Spleen, and Large Intestine meridians clear damp-heat from the intestines and reduce the overactive immune response. Acupuncture during a flare can significantly reduce the severity and duration of symptoms, and some patients find it helps their medication work more effectively.
During remission - Treatment shifts to strengthening the Spleen and Kidney systems, rebuilding energy reserves, improving nutrient absorption, and reducing the likelihood of the next flare. This is when the deeper, preventive work happens. By strengthening the digestive system's foundational health, acupuncture can help extend the time between flares and reduce their severity when they do occur.
Modalities include:
Acupuncture - Points selected based on your disease pattern and current status. For damp-heat flares, points that clear inflammation and stop diarrhea. For Spleen deficiency, points that strengthen digestive function and improve energy. For Kidney depletion, points that rebuild the body's foundational reserves. For stress-related exacerbation, Liver and Pericardium points that calm the nervous system and protect the gut from stress-driven inflammation. Hristina uses a combination of abdominal, leg, arm, and back points tailored to your specific presentation.
Moxibustion - Warming therapy applied to the abdomen and key Spleen and Kidney points to strengthen digestive fire and support the body's ability to heal the intestinal lining. Research on moxibustion for IBD has shown promising results, including reductions in inflammatory markers and improvements in clinical symptoms. Moxibustion is especially valuable during remission when the focus is on rebuilding the weakened digestive system.
Electroacupuncture - Applied to abdominal and back points to regulate the immune response and reduce visceral pain. Electroacupuncture has been shown to activate the vagus nerve, which plays a key role in controlling intestinal inflammation. This mechanism, known as the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway, is an area of active research in IBD management.
Cupping - Gentle cupping applied to the back along the Bladder meridian to release tension, improve circulation to the digestive organs, and calm the nervous system. Cupping is used during remission phases and is kept gentle to avoid overstimulation during active flares.
Chinese Herbal Medicine - Custom formulas adapted to your disease activity. During flares, herbs that clear damp-heat, stop bleeding, and reduce intestinal inflammation. During remission, formulas that nourish the Spleen and Kidney, improve nutrient absorption, and rebuild blood that has been lost through chronic inflammation. Herbal medicine provides continuous support between acupuncture sessions and can help address the nutritional deficiencies and fatigue that IBD patients commonly experience. All herbal prescriptions are reviewed against your current medication to avoid interactions.
Hristina's clinical experience at John H. Stroger Hospital (Cook County) included treating patients with complex autoimmune and inflammatory conditions alongside their conventional medical teams. Her training at Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine included the traditional approach to chronic intestinal inflammation, which has been documented and refined in Chinese medical texts for over a thousand years.
What to Expect at Your First Visit
Your first appointment at our Schaumburg office begins with a thorough review of your IBD history. Hristina will want to understand your diagnosis, disease location, medication history, surgical history if applicable, and how your condition is currently affecting your daily life. She'll ask about your gut symptoms but also about your energy, sleep, mood, joint pain, and overall wellbeing, because IBD affects far more than the intestines.
After her TCM assessment, she'll explain which patterns she's identified and outline a treatment plan that works with your gastroenterologist's protocol. Your first treatment will be tailored to whether you're currently flaring or in remission.
Treatment plan: During active flares, 2 sessions per week until symptoms stabilize, then tapering to weekly. During remission, 1 session per week for 8-12 weeks to build foundational strength, then maintenance sessions every 2-4 weeks for ongoing support. IBD is a long-term condition, and most patients benefit from consistent, ongoing treatment. Many patients notice improvements in energy, pain, and stool quality within the first 3-5 sessions, with more significant changes in flare frequency developing over 3-6 months.
Session length: First visit is approximately 75-90 minutes including assessment. Follow-up sessions run 45-60 minutes.
Insurance: If you have BCBS or United Healthcare, your acupuncture sessions at our Schaumburg location are covered as an in-network benefit. Our front desk team can verify your coverage before your first appointment.
Who This Is For
Acupuncture for Crohn's and colitis at our Schaumburg location is a good fit if you:
- Have Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis and want complementary support alongside your medication
- Are in remission but still experience fatigue, abdominal discomfort, or anxiety about flares
- Want to reduce the frequency and severity of your IBD flares
- Deal with IBD-related joint pain, skin problems, or mood changes that your GI doctor can't specifically treat
- Experience medication side effects and want support managing them
- Have had bowel surgery and want to support your recovery and reduce the risk of recurrence
- Are struggling with the fatigue and nutritional depletion that comes with chronic intestinal inflammation
- Feel like your medication is controlling the inflammation but not giving you your quality of life back
- Want a practitioner who treats you as a whole person, not just a set of lab results
Who This May Not Be For
If you're experiencing severe bloody diarrhea with fever, signs of bowel obstruction (severe cramping, vomiting, inability to pass gas or stool), or symptoms of a fistula or abscess (severe localized pain with fever), please contact your gastroenterologist or go to the emergency room. These are serious IBD complications that require immediate medical management. Acupuncture is not a replacement for your IBD medication, especially biologics and immunosuppressants. If you're considering changing your medication regimen, always discuss that with your gastroenterologist first. Hristina is happy to coordinate with your GI team to ensure your care is fully integrated.
