Acupuncture for Post-Concussion Syndrome in Schaumburg, IL
You were told the concussion would resolve in a few weeks. But weeks turned into months, and the headaches, brain fog, light sensitivity, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating are still there. Post-concussion syndrome is what happens when the brain doesn't fully recover from the initial injury, and conventional medicine has limited tools to help beyond rest and time. At Acupuncture Divine Flow in Schaumburg, Hristina Dimova treats post-concussion syndrome by reducing neurological inflammation, restoring blood flow to the brain, calming the overstimulated nervous system, and supporting the brain's ability to heal itself.

Why Post-Concussion Symptoms Linger
A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that disrupts normal brain function. In most cases, the brain recovers within days to weeks. But for 10-30% of concussion patients, symptoms persist well beyond the expected recovery window. Headaches, dizziness, brain fog, difficulty concentrating, memory problems, light and sound sensitivity, mood changes, sleep disruption, and fatigue can continue for months or even years. This is post-concussion syndrome (PCS), and it can be profoundly disabling even when your brain scans look normal.
The reason symptoms persist has to do with what the concussion did at a cellular level. The impact sheared microscopic nerve fibers, disrupted neurotransmitter balance, triggered neuroinflammation, and altered blood flow regulation in the brain. Standard imaging (CT, MRI) can't see this damage, which is why patients are often told there's nothing wrong even though they clearly aren't functioning normally. The standard advice is rest, gradual return to activity, and management of individual symptoms with medications for headaches, sleep aids for insomnia, and sometimes antidepressants for mood changes. But these are band-aids that don't address the underlying neurological dysfunction.
Traditional Chinese Medicine views post-concussion syndrome as a combination of blood stagnation in the head from the original trauma, qi stagnation from the disruption of normal energy flow through the brain, and progressive depletion of Kidney essence (which governs brain function in TCM) from the sustained effort of trying to heal. The Liver system, which controls the smooth flow of qi and is highly sensitive to stress and frustration, becomes stagnant as patients struggle with the cognitive and emotional limitations PCS imposes. The Du meridian, which runs along the spine into the brain, is often disrupted after head trauma and needs to be restored for full neurological recovery.
How We Treat Post-Concussion Syndrome at Our Schaumburg Office
Hristina's evaluation maps your full symptom picture to understand which areas of brain function have been most affected. She'll ask about your headache patterns (location, quality, triggers), cognitive symptoms (memory, concentration, word-finding), sensory sensitivities (light, sound, screens), vestibular symptoms (dizziness, balance), sleep quality, mood changes, and energy levels. She also reviews the injury itself, including when it happened, what treatments you've tried, and how your symptoms have evolved. Her pulse and tongue assessment identifies the TCM patterns underlying your PCS presentation.
Treatment may include:
Scalp Acupuncture - Specialized needling at specific zones on the scalp that correspond to the brain's functional areas. The motor zone, sensory zone, memory zone, dizziness and balance area, and vision zone are each targeted based on your specific deficits. Scalp acupuncture directly stimulates the brain regions affected by the concussion and promotes neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to form new connections and reroute around damaged areas. This technique is one of the most powerful tools for neurological rehabilitation and is widely used in Chinese hospitals for traumatic brain injury recovery.
Body Acupuncture - Points along the Du meridian (governing vessel), Gallbladder, Bladder, and Liver meridians to restore normal qi and blood flow through the brain and head. For post-concussion headaches, specific point prescriptions based on headache location (temple, forehead, vertex, occipital). For brain fog and cognitive problems, points that nourish Kidney essence and clear stagnation from the head. For emotional symptoms, Liver and Heart points that regulate mood and reduce the anxiety and irritability that PCS creates.
Electroacupuncture - Applied to scalp and body points to provide sustained neurological stimulation, reduce neuroinflammation, and improve cerebral blood flow. Research has shown electroacupuncture to promote nerve repair and reduce inflammatory markers in the brain following traumatic injury. For patients with persistent brain fog and cognitive slowing, electroacupuncture can help jumpstart the recovery process.
Cupping - Applied to the neck and upper back to release the cervical tension that almost always accompanies a concussion. The same force that injured the brain typically strains the neck muscles, and chronic cervical tension can contribute to headaches, dizziness, and restricted blood flow to the brain. Many PCS patients find significant headache relief when their neck tension is addressed.
Gua Sha - Applied along the neck, base of the skull, and upper back to improve circulation to the brain and release fascial restrictions that develop after head and neck trauma. Gua sha in the suboccipital area can immediately reduce the heavy, pressure-like headaches common in PCS.
Chinese Herbal Medicine - Formulas that move blood stagnation from the head, nourish Kidney essence to support brain recovery, reduce neuroinflammation, and calm the nervous system. Herbal medicine provides the continuous daily brain support that PCS recovery requires, working alongside weekly acupuncture to accelerate healing.
Hristina's training at Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine included neurological acupuncture and scalp acupuncture techniques developed specifically for brain injury rehabilitation. Her clinical work at John H. Stroger Hospital (Cook County) included treating patients with traumatic brain injuries and post-concussion syndrome.
What to Expect at Your First Visit
Your first appointment at our Schaumburg office is a comprehensive evaluation of how the concussion is still affecting you. Hristina won't dismiss your symptoms or tell you they should have resolved by now. She'll map out exactly which brain functions are compromised and design a treatment protocol that targets each one.
Your first treatment will combine scalp acupuncture with body acupuncture and one or two supporting modalities. Some patients notice an immediate improvement in headache intensity or mental clarity during or after the first session. For others, the improvement is more gradual, with noticeable gains in concentration, energy, or headache frequency developing over the first few weeks.
Treatment plan: For PCS present for less than 6 months, 2 sessions per week for 4-6 weeks, then weekly sessions for another 4-6 weeks. For PCS that has persisted beyond 6 months, weekly sessions for 3-4 months with reassessment. Most patients notice meaningful improvement in headaches and cognitive clarity within the first 4-8 sessions. A full course of 15-25 sessions is typical for moderate to severe PCS. Sleep and mood often improve before cognitive symptoms fully resolve.
Session length: First visit is approximately 75-90 minutes including assessment. Follow-up sessions run 45-60 minutes.
Insurance: If you have BCBS or United Healthcare, your acupuncture sessions at our Schaumburg location are covered as an in-network benefit. Our front desk team can verify your coverage before your first appointment.

- Had a concussion and your symptoms haven't resolved within the expected timeframe
- Experience persistent headaches, brain fog, or difficulty concentrating after a head injury
- Have light sensitivity, sound sensitivity, or screen intolerance that limits your work and daily life
- Deal with dizziness or balance problems that developed after your concussion
- Have mood changes, anxiety, irritability, or depression since the injury
- Experience fatigue that doesn't improve with rest
- Have been told your imaging is normal but you clearly aren't functioning normally
- Are an athlete returning from a concussion and want to ensure full neurological recovery
- Have had multiple concussions and are dealing with cumulative effects
- Want treatment that targets brain recovery rather than just managing individual symptoms
Who This May Not Be For
If you've just sustained a head injury and are experiencing worsening headache, repeated vomiting, seizures, confusion, loss of consciousness, clear fluid leaking from the nose or ear, or unequal pupil size, go to the emergency room immediately. These are signs of a serious brain injury that requires urgent medical evaluation. If you have a concussion that occurred within the past week, please follow your doctor's initial recovery protocol first. Acupuncture is most appropriate once the acute phase has passed (typically after 7-10 days) and symptoms are persisting beyond the expected recovery window. Hristina works alongside neurologists and concussion specialists to support comprehensive recovery.
