What Is Gua Sha?

Gua Sha (pronounced "gwah-shah") is an ancient East Asian healing technique that involves gently scraping the skin with a smooth-edged tool to stimulate blood flow, release tension, and promote healing. The name translates to "scraping sand"—referring to the grainy texture that sometimes appears on the skin during treatment.

Using a smooth jade, rose quartz, or specialized Gua Sha tool, I apply gentle, repeated strokes to the skin with oil or balm. This action increases microcirculation, breaks up fascial adhesions, and moves stagnant blood and lymph that has accumulated in the tissues.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Gua Sha is believed to move Qi (vital energy) and blood, releasing blockages that cause pain and illness. Modern research confirms that Gua Sha increases surface blood flow by up to 400%, reduces inflammation, and triggers the body's natural immune and anti-inflammatory responses.

Gua Sha FAQs

Body Gua Sha can feel intense in areas with significant tension or stagnation, but it should never be painful. Most people describe it as a "good hurt" similar to a deep tissue massage. Facial Gua Sha is very gentle and relaxing. I always adjust the pressure based on your comfort level.

The red marks (called "sha") are petechiae—tiny blood spots that appear when stagnant blood is brought to the surface. They indicate areas of blocked energy and poor circulation. Marks typically fade within 2-5 days and are not painful. Not everyone gets marks, and their absence doesn't mean the treatment wasn't effective.

While both release stagnation and improve circulation, they work differently. Cupping uses suction to lift tissues upward, while Gua Sha uses pressure and friction to move stagnation laterally. Gua Sha is often better for superficial tension and areas where cups can't be placed. Many patients benefit from both techniques.

Yes! Facial Gua Sha is gentle enough for home use. I can teach you proper techniques and recommend tools for your self-care routine. However, therapeutic body Gua Sha should be performed by a trained practitioner for safety and effectiveness.
